Renegade 2026 Kentucky Derby: Odds, Jockey & Trainer
  • Renegade arrives at Churchill Downs as the morning-line favorite at approximately 4-1 after winning the Arkansas Derby by four lengths.
  • Trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Kentucky Derby twice, with Super Saver in 2010 and Always Dreaming in 2017.
  • Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a five-time Eclipse Award winner who chose Renegade over stablemate Further Ado when finalizing his Derby assignment.
  • As a son of Into Mischief and a dam by Curlin, Renegade’s bloodline is well-suited for the 1¼-mile distance.
  • Bovada and BetOnline have installed Renegade near the top of their Derby futures boards, with FanDuel Racing and TwinSpires also offering competitive prices.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The run-up to the 152nd Kentucky Derby has produced no shortage of worthy contenders, but one name keeps appearing at the top of the odds board: Renegade.

The bay colt trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher enters the May 2 classic at Churchill Downs as the morning-line favorite at approximately 4-1. His path to favoritism was earned the hard way — on the racetrack, with back-to-back Grade 1-caliber performances that have made bettors and handicappers stand up and take notice. Platforms like Bovada and BetOnline, two of the most widely used sites for legal Kentucky Derby betting, have had Renegade holding steady near the top of their futures pools even as other contenders made their cases in late prep races.

Renegade’s 3-year-old campaign started in February with a victory in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Then, on March 28, he put the Derby conversation in motion with a commanding four-length score in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. It was a performance that showcased both tactical flexibility and a powerful late kick — two qualities Pletcher believes will serve his horse well at a mile and a quarter.

What’s interesting about Renegade is that his 2-year-old season didn’t go according to plan. He finished first by a head in his second outing but was disqualified for interference, then placed second to Paladin in the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct last December. Yet those setbacks, rather than derailing his campaign, seemed to sharpen his focus heading into the spring.

Pletcher, 58, is no stranger to Derby week pressure. The veteran horseman has saddled more than 5,700 career winners and owns two Derby trophies — Super Saver claimed the roses in 2010, and Always Dreaming got the job done in 2017. If Renegade can deliver, it would be Pletcher’s third Derby win. His record managing horses through the prep cycle and into the Derby is among the best in the sport.

In the irons will be Irad Ortiz Jr., a five-time Eclipse Award winner widely regarded as one of the most talented riders in North America. Ortiz had a meaningful choice to make when jockey assignments were finalized: Renegade or Further Ado, a Brad Cox-trained stablemate who had just blown the Blue Grass Stakes field apart by 11 lengths. Ortiz chose Renegade, a decision that said plenty about his confidence in the horse.

Renegade’s pedigree sets up well for the mile-and-a-quarter distance. His sire is Into Mischief, a stallion that needs no introduction in the Derby context — his offspring have won the race three times since 2020, including last year’s champion Sovereignty. But what gives Renegade a slight edge on some of his Into Mischief siblings is his dam, a stakes winner by Curlin, the two-time Horse of the Year known as one of the great distance influences in modern American breeding. That combination produces a horse who figures to appreciate every yard of the 1¼-mile trip.

Still, there are questions. Renegade has made just five career starts, and his best Beyer Speed Figure of 98 — while solid — sits below stablemates Further Ado (106) and Commandment (101). In a field likely to include 18 to 20 starters, clean racing room will be critical.

Pletcher and Ortiz know what it takes to win here. Whether Renegade can outrun a talented field that includes two Brad Cox horses, a Santa Anita Derby winner, and a pair of overseas invaders remains to be seen — but in a race full of question marks, he might be the most clearly defined answer.
